Overview and Significance

From time to time, Lord Dattatreya, the Cosmic Principle of the Divine Teacher, incarnates in a human body to enable humans to relate to him and get uplifted. In a previous Age, a group of sages guided by Sage Bharadwaja conducted a great ritual to the Sun and prayed for an incarnation of the Lord. In fulfillment of the promise given by Lord Dattatreya to the group of sages, he decided to incarnate in the present Dark Age (the age of Kali) as Sripada Srivallabha.

Sripada Srivallabha is an Indian Guru from the tradition of Lord Dattatreya. He is the first complete incarnation of Lord Dattatreya. His incarnation took place in the year 1320 AD in Sri Pithikapuram (today known as Pithapuram), near Andhra Pradesh, India.

Sri Sripada Srivallabha stands as a paragon of excellence among incarnations. His incarnation was very much necessary for those whose hearts were polluted by the dark age of Kali, for those whose actions were conditioned by destiny, for those who live by sinful money, and for all the human beings in the Kali Yuga. He is a great treasure of compassion, a personification of ‘Punya’ (good deeds), and a person with a very holy history. He is admired in the world as an expression of the highest spirituality. No one is equal to Sri Sripada Srivallabha in removing all kinds of devotees’ impurities, and imparting them peace when they visit, remember, worship, or meditate upon Him.

In the words of Sripada himself, ‘Undoubtedly, I am Datta. As you have a body, I also came with a body to enable you to recognise Me. But I am formless and without attributes. I will constantly take care of the welfare of those who adore Me with pure devotion, who cast all their burdens on Me, and seek total surrender from Me.’

When one’s previous birth’s sins are annihilated, one will be blessed to learn about Lord Dattatreya and His Divine Incarnations. One will experience His presence everywhere. The unique characteristic of Lord Datta and His Divine Manifestations is not to terminate the evildoers but to transform and make them follow the path of knowledge.

Life History

Sripada Srivallabha was born to a pious couple named Ghandikota Appala Lakshmi Narasimha Raja Sharma and Sumathi Maharani as their third son. Sripada had two elder brothers named Sridhara Sharma (born blind) & Rama Raja Sharma (born lame), and three younger sisters – Srividyadhari, Radha & Surekha. Appala Raja Sharma was a great devotee of Lord Datta and lived the life of a priest.

One day, when Appala Raja Sharma was preparing for the anniversary (shrardha karma – a yearly ceremony to pay homage to the departed souls) of his father, a sage with a divine glow on his face came for seeking alms. Sumathi Maharani, moved by the lustre on His face, offered food to Him even though the Brahmins had not had their food. (During such rituals, the guests (Brahmins) who partake in such ceremonies are to be given the utmost priority, and no one else should be offered food until the rituals are over and Brahmins are fed.) Pleased by the gesture of Sumathi Maharani, the sage said, ‘Oh Mother, do you have any wishes?’ Sumathi Maharani prayed, ‘Since you called me Mother, I would be extremely blessed if I had a son of your light and radiance.’ Suddenly the sage turned into a sixteen-year-old boy and said, ‘Mother! I am Sripada Srivallabha. I myself will be born to you.’ Thus, Sripada announced his arrival to his mother, Sumathi Maharani, even before he was born.

The grandparents of Sripada Srivallabha once belonged to the Malayadri village of Guntur District of Andhra Pradesh state in India. Malladi Bapanna Avadhanulu a.k.a. Bapanaarya is the maternal grandfather, and Rajamamba is the maternal grandmother, of Sripada. Bapanaarya was also known as Satya Rusheeshwara (the upholder of truth). There was another great scholar by the name Malladi Sridhara Avadhanulu who was the brother of Rajamamba. Once Bapanaarya and Sridhara Avadhanulu performed a sacred yagna (fire) in ‘Ainavilli’ (a village in Andhra Pradesh) and were blessed with the appearance of Lord Ganapati during the poornahuti (sacred offering of completeness). This was witnessed by everyone present. Lord Ganapati accepted the offering and declared that he would be appearing as Sripada Srivallabha on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi.

Sripadas Srivallabha’s Miraculous Birth Phenomena

It was on Ganesh Chaturthi day (celebrated as the day on which Lord Ganesha descended to Earth from Mount Kailasa with his mother Gowri/ Parvathi) in the year 1320 A.D, Tuesday, the 9th of September as per Gregorian calendar, that a son was born as their 3rd child to Sumathi Maharani and Appala Raja Sharma in Pithapuram. He came out of the mother’s womb as a dazzling illumination. Sumati Maharani fainted immediately after He was born. Auspicious musical notes from diverse musical instruments were heard from the labour room. After some time, an invisible voice warned all people to leave the room. Then the four Vedas, eighteen Puranas (the form of the holy scriptures) and holy persons arrived in the shape of brilliant lights to greet and honour Sripada. When Sripada was born, a cobra with three hoods appeared, and for the next eighteen days held its hoods as an umbrella of protection wherever He was.

Immediately after his birth, Sripada began chanting Omkara (the primordial sound of OM). Even while he was in the cradle, he used to speak at length in the language of Sanskrit. When he was a month old, he could walk freely. He was aptly given the name Sripada (Feet of God) because he carried the most sublime symbols of a conch and a wheel on his feet. Accompanied by his grandfather, he attended several councils of the scholars and fluently spoke about various Shastras (books containing manuals of instructions or standards of discipline)

From the time of his birth, Sripada appeared to different people in forms of different ages, often as a boy of sixteen years of age. He was also very humorous and playful, and he conducted many extraordinary supernatural acts from the age of one year. He did many miracles, changed outdated rituals, and transformed numerous people in the village of Pithikapuram. It is a beauty in the life of Sripada that when a person had deficiencies, and he healed them in miraculous ways, he always gave the karmic reasons for their flaws and suggested rectifications. He could see the past lives of the beings, and he even saw humans incarnating in the form of a bull or a cow. He also gave many prophecies and spoke about his future incarnations and of others.

Sripada stayed with his parents until he was 16 years old. When he first gave darshan as a sage to Sumathi Maharani (before he was born), he told her clearly that they should not think of performing his marriage after taking birth as Sripada, and if they tried to do, he would certainly leave the house. At the age of sixteen, when his parents asked him to marry, he replied, ‘I have greater purposes to fulfill; therefore, I seek your permission to leave the house.’ His mother, Sumathi, said, ‘You are the only able son we have. Your elder brothers, one blind, the other lame, cannot be offered a woman. If you do not marry and leave the house, our lineage will not continue. You are the only one.’ Then Sripada touched both his two brothers and made them normal in an instant. He gave eyesight to the eldest brother and took away the lameness from the other one. Then Sripada said, ‘Now your two sons are eligible for marriage. Please permit me to leave.’ He also explained that he has a sister called Vasavi (a female consort of Sripada). ‘She is the same essence taking to a female form.’ Saying thus, he left Pithikapuram and became an ascetic, a wandering mendicant.

About Vasavi aka Vasavi Devi or Vasavi Kanyaka Parameshwari:

She is the female aspect of the indwelling God, Vaasudeva (Lord Krishna, who is an avatar of Maha Vishnu was called Vaasudeva, denoting he is the son of Vasudev). Vasavi, the Universal Mother, is a virgin, meaning she is pure nature. Like Sripada, who is a youth of sixteen years, she is described as a woman of sixteen years, meaning sixteen dimensions. The World Mother is worshipped in various forms such as Durga, or Radha in the Krishna system. In South India, Vasavi is worshipped as Kanyaka Kumari (maiden).

To safeguard her purity from an assault of a demonic incarnation, Vasavi once walked into the fire, together with 112 couples from the Vaishya (businessmen) community. She then gave the promise that she will eternally stay with the Vaishya community and will provide them with her blessings as long as she is worshipped. Therefore, in India, in towns where there is a business community, there is usually a temple for Vasavi Kanyaka.

‘Wherever Vasavi Kanyakamba’s name is remembered, there Datta will live incognito.’
– Sripada

As a wandering mendicant, Sripada went to various places; his visit would be of significance to those places. He went mostly from Southeast Andhra Pradesh to Northeast India, through Karnataka and Maharashtra. He went to Varanasi (Benares, Kashi), to another center on the west coast called Gokarna, and to Srisailam. Sripada then settled at Kuruvapuram (today Kurugaddi, Kuruvapur) and stayed there until he was 30 years old, blessing his devotees. Kuruvapuram is located on an island in the Krishna River, at the border between Andhra Pradesh (today Telangana) and Karnataka. Many people came to him seeking help and were enlightened. He was teaching, healing, and many extraordinary revelations happened around him.

When he used to stay at Kuruvapuram, Sripada held his darbar (court) at either Kuruvapuram or Panch Dev Pahad (a place near Kuruvapuram). When the darbar was at Pancha Deva Pahad, Sripada had to cross River Krishna. When he walked on the river, miraculously, a lotus leaf would appear wherever he stepped. During his darbar times, prasad (consecrated food) was distributed to everyone who attended.

As a teacher of spirituality, he followed a particular schedule:
On Sundays he used to talk about Yoga Vidya (knowledge of yoga),
on Mondays about epics,
on Tuesdays about Upanishads (Hindu sacred treatises),
on Wednesdays he would explain the meaning of Vedas (religious text explaining the eternal path or Sanatana Dharma),
on Thursdays He taught about the Guru Tattva (Cosmic Teacher principle),
on Fridays about Srividya (Shri Vidya is a Hindu Tantric religious system devoted to the Goddess as Lalitha Tripurasundari) and He used to distribute rhizomes of turmeric to all women,
and on Saturdays He instructed about the worship of Lord Shiva.

Sripada Srivallabha used to spend the nights at the island Kuruvapuram, the other side of the river Krishna, and came to this bank every dawn. He used to take a bath, worship Lord Shiva and his son Ganesha, do Surya Namaskars (Salutations to Sun) on a rock, sit and meditate for some time and then conduct satsangs to humans. In the evenings, He would walk on top of the water and go back to the island. The place where He used to sit in Samadhi is currently the Nirguna Paaduka temple (the Holy footwear of Sripada is worshipped there). In the nights, many celestial beings came to meet Him, and He conducted satsangs for them. The banyan tree is the celestial portal.

Sripada says, ‘When I say I am Datta, I am Datta. When I say I am Datta Upaasaka (the one who worships Lord Datta), I am becoming Datta Upaasaka. When I say I am Sripada Srivallabha, I am becoming Sripada Srivallabha. What I wish will happen. Whatever way I am thinking, I am becoming that. That is My ‘Tatwam’ (principle/ phenomenon).’

He performed many miracles during his stay at Kuruvapuram, blessing many devotees. In his 30th year (1350 AD), Sripada declared in Kuruvapuram that he would disappear, but also announced that he lives forever: ‘My form will be concealed, but this Sripada Srivallabha will stand as an eternal reality.’ After saying this, He disappeared into the Krishna River and assured that He will be moving incognito in Kuruvapuram always.

Sripada gave the assurance that He will incarnate whenever dharma, the Law, touches the lowest level. Following that assurance, and following His incarnation, Lord Dattatreya took birth in five successive incarnations: 1. Narasimha Saraswati, 2. Manik Prabhu, 3. Swami Samarth of Akkalkot, 4. Shirdi Sai Baba and, most recently, 5. Sathya Sai Baba. These incarnations all serve to restore divine law and to protect his followers from downfall. He achieved this primary purpose of his incarnations by teaching, by giving examples, and, most of all, by creating situations that people had to experience to learn, adjust, and become elevated.

Tradition and Gurus

Exactly 2498 years before Datta manifested as Sripada Srivallabha on Ganesh Chaturthi, great Yogis in different higher spiritual states did intense penance in Badarikashram (today’s Badrinath) and prayed for the darshan (divine vision) of Lord Dattatreya. Due to his compassion, Lord Datta gave them darshan as a 25-year-old young man. He taught them Kriya yoga, which was a very ancient and sacred technique to accelerate spiritual transformation. This yoga is known through the name of Babaji, or as Kriya Babaji. Lord Datta also promised that he would take birth as Sripada Srivallabha in Peethikapuram after 2498 years.

Sripada said his first Guru was his father, who initiated him into Gayathri Mantra. His grandfather Shri Baapanarya was his second Guru as he learned ‘Veda Vidya’ (the knowledge of Vedas) from him. Sripada graced many miracles right from his childhood. He never had any formal education. He was omniscient right from his birth. Sripada finished studying Vedas, Shastras, etc., by the age of seven. After his ‘Upanayana‘ (sacred thread ceremony), he started lecturing on these.

Teachings

The Aim of His incarnation is to bless Maha Siddhas (Great sages), Maha Yogis (Great Saints), and to Uphold Dharma (righteousness) through them in the Universe. To impart knowledge to the ignorant through his actions, engage in sportive plays (lilas), and perform miracles—all were part of His mission.

To be eligible to receive the grace of Sripada Srivallabha, the ego in us should die. All types of egos must become weak. Only then will we be able to understand His power, His grace, and His true nature. No one can come to his Samsthan (temple) in Peethikapuram without His will, however rich they may be or how saintly they may be.

Twelve Assurances of Sripada to His Devotees

Srīpada gave the following Statements of Assurance to all devotees in the house of his devotee Datta Das as per the book Sripada Srivallabha Charitramutam:

1. I will remain in a subtle form in every place where My biography is devotedly read.
2. Just like an eyelid protects the eye, I will protect the person who is dedicated to Me through mind, word, and deed.
3. Daily in the afternoon, I seek alms in Sri Pithikapuram. My arrival is a divine secret.
4. I will reduce all the karmas into heaps of ashes of those who continuously meditate upon Me. Even if karmas have accumulated from many births, I will burn them down.
5. If you give food to the hungry and needy, I will be pleased.
6. I am Sripada Srivallabha! Sri Mahalakshmi (Goddess of wealth) will shine with all Her glorious attributes in the houses of My devotees.
7. If you have a pure heart, My grace will always be on you.
8. I am agreeable even when you adore any form of deity or take the support of any Sadguru.
9. All your prayers will reach Me. My grace transmits to you through the form of the deity you worship or through your Sadguru.
10. Sripada Srivallabha is not merely confined to this name and form. You can know My cosmic form, which encompasses all forms of deities and all forces as My integral parts, only through strict observance of the spiritual discipline.
11. Mine is a comprehensive yogic incarnation. Great yogis and great Siddhas always meditate upon Me.
12. If you take Me as a support, I will preach to you the path of dharma and karma. I will always protect you from a downfall.

Selected extracts from Sripada Srivallabha Charitamrutam:

  • I am the One who is in the form of all Gurus. If anyone gives Dakshina (sacred offering of money) to Me, I will multiply it hundred-fold and grant him when the time comes.
  • Those who abuse the incarnation of Sri Datta would have venereal diseases.
  • My devotees tie Me with their bonds of devotion. I am only bound by pure care and devotion.
  • I will personally receive the Prasad (food offered to one’s deity or Guru) offered in the houses of my devotees through subtle rays.
  • I am the great resolve that administers the will of all deities and humans. I am the ‘Brahman’ (Supreme Consciousness) from which all the incarnations of God emanate. Probably an animal caught in the mouth of a tiger may escape, but you who are caught in My hand cannot escape.
  • I exist in all yogic states. A person who is a yogi in those respective states will definitely meet Me.
  • All the sins of those who adore Sripada are removed. As I am omnipresent in every creature, I receive the tendencies, propensities, and impurities from them.
  • Daily through holy bath and Japa (chanting), I burn those impurities, etc., and help towards the development of living beings.
  • I attract into Me many evil influences of those who adore Me. I withdraw My strength from those who are proud and become frenzy with arrogance.
  • I give what is due to each one after measuring and weighing carefully according to their dharma karmas (justified actions).
  • A small ray emanating from Me becomes a great yogi or a great Siddha. This earth cannot endure even that tiny ray. You cannot bear the small quantity of kundalini given to you. Therefore, I conceal Myself in Maya.
  • If I feel it necessary, I can exhibit any extraordinary miracle. There is no load I cannot lift. There is no problem I cannot solve. There are no boons I cannot offer. There is no work I cannot perform.
  • My order is like an edict carved in a rock. No creature in the creation can violate My law.
  • No Avadhuta (ascetic) can obtain complete perfection without remembering My name. He cannot overcome the obstacles to yoga.
  • I am the servant of the servants of My devotees.
  • Since parents grant us birth, they deserve the utmost adoration. I won’t show My grace on those who neglect them in their old age.
  • Even the liberated souls who merged in Me should come out when I call them.
  • God is not pleased with externals. He is pleased with devotional inner feelings. The inner feeling is an eternal power.
  • Lord Dattatreya is the cosmic principle of the Teacher, the Guru. He is the Teacher of the Teachers. He is teaching and enlightening beings on all planes of existence. The teachings of Sripada are simple and profound. Here are some extracts of his teachings.
  • There is nothing which I cannot do for the sake of My devotees. There is nothing which I cannot lift, and there is no problem which I cannot solve for them. People who believe Me through mind, action, and speech, leaving all other dharma behind, are blessed. Even if you are following your own righteous path, if you remember My name, I will protect you like the eyelid protects the eye. I am the embodiment of love. You will know Me through love only.
  • I will continuously take care of the welfare of those who adore Me with pure devotion and those who cast all their burdens on Me and seek total surrender from Me. I am Sripada. I am Srivallabha.
  • I am a slave to those who forget all worries and continuously meditate upon Me.
  • Whoever it may be, if he sincerely chants My name ‘Sripada Vallabha Digambara, Datta Digambara!’ I will be easily accessible and bring all auspicious developments.
  • I am Datta. I am the sole phenomenon that pervades millions and millions of universes. Directions are my clothes. I am ‘Digambara.’ Whoever chants with purity of mind, speech, and body ‘Datta Digambarā! Sripadavallabha Digambara! Narasimha Saraswati Digambara’, I will stay there in subtle form.
  • If you are discouraged that you are a sinner, and if you seek My refuge and call Me with love, ‘Sripada Datta! Srivallabha Digambara!’, I will, in a trice, burn all your sins and make you virtuous.
  • Constant remembrance of the name of Sripada is the only means of achievement in this and the other world.
  • If you salute your Guru, he salutes his Guru, and in this way, all the salutations will reach Me only, being the First Guru.

The love of Sripada towards His devotees is superior to the love of 10 million mothers.

Sacred Practices/Sadhana

Sri Bapanarya had a true vision of his grandson as Sri Dattatreya and recited the ‘Siddha Mangala Stotram’ in a state of trance. These words uttered from an exalted state of experience resulting from the vision of Sri Datta are very powerful. In every word lives consciousness that will prevail for many more eons. There are no restrictions and regulations to read and recite this Siddha Mangala Stotram.

Sripada Himself exalted the importance of reciting this stotra. ‘This stotra will be read and recited by worthy people. By reading this, Siddha Purushas can be seen, and their touch also can be experienced. All desires of the mind will be fulfilled. Devotees who worship Datta with a pure mind, speech, and action will be blessed by the grace of Sripada as soon as they recite this stotra. Siddhas in the ethereal region will move about incognito wherever this stotra is recited.’

Miracles

There were many miracles that Sripada Srivallabha graced during His lifetime. Even now, many miracles happen to devotees who surrender to Sripada and have complete faith in Him. It is said that it is highly impossible even for 1000 headed snake Adisesha (the serpent on which Lord Mahavishnu rests) to describe the greatness and miracles of Sripada. However, it is a humble attempt to give some of them here.

SAVED FROM SUICIDE, A MIRACULOUS HEALING, AND PROPHECY

There was a widow named Ambica whose son was a dullard though his late father was a learned person. He was unable to retain his memory and was very forgetful. His father passed away due to the worry of his son’s dullness. All neighbors teased and taunted the boy. The mother and son had to resort to begging for livelihood. Fed up with that kind of life, both decided to commit suicide by drowning in the river. When they came to the river, they saw Sripada Srivallabha taking his bath. The omniscient Sripada stopped them from committing suicide and overflown by compassion guided them to observe a vrata (a routine fast with austerity) called Shanipradosha (12th day after the waning or waxing moon is called Pradosha). If it falls on Saturday, it is very auspicious for the worship of Lord Shiva so that she would get a good son like Himself at least in the next birth. With his benevolent hands, he blessed the boy who became instantly intelligent and learned. Ambica and her son left and spent the rest of their life as instructed. Over time, Ambica died and was reborn as Amba-Bhavani, who became the mother of the second Datta incarnation known in the name of Shri Narasimha Saraswati Swami. Because there could be no one like Him, he Himself took birth as Ambica’s son, as per the promise given.

A WASHERMAN DESIRES ROYALTY

While Sripada Srivallabha was staying at Kuravapur, he used to go to the river Krishna for the customary thrice-daily bath. A washerman used to visit him daily to make his obeisance and prostrate before him. One day Sripada Srivallabha casually remarked to him to go and reign as a king. The washerman kept these words in mind. One day a Muslim king came to the river with his entourage for enjoying an outing with his well-dressed and ornamented wives. The washerman felt jealous of the king and said to himself, ‘Which deity could this king have worshipped and which Guru he must have to be able to enjoy such wealth!’ When the washerman visited Sripada that day, Sripada Srivallabha read his mind and told him that unless one satisfies one’s desires, the mind does not get cleansed of unfulfilled desires, which causes troubles in future births. Therefore, he should take the next birth as a king in a Muslim dynasty. Sripada Srivallabha further told him that He Himself would be reborn as Shri Narasimha Saraswati, and they would meet again in the next birth.

DEVOTEE ROBBED, KILLED, AND BROUGHT BACK TO LIFE

After Sripada Srivallabha disappeared, a Brahmin named Vallabhesa vowed to go to Kuravapur and feed 1,000 Brahmins if he earned more than his usual profit. Near Kuravapur, Vallabhesa met thieves in the disguise of devotees. They introduced themselves as Sripada devotees and told Vallabhesa that every year they go on pilgrimage to Kuruvapura. After reaching a deserted place, the thieves robbed him of his money and killed Vallabhesa. But just before he died, Vallabhesa prayed for Sripada. Sripada Srivallabha suddenly appeared from nowhere and killed the bandits with his Trishul (trident). One of the thieves prayed to Sripada to show mercy on him. Sripada ordered the person to attach the separated head to the body of Vallabhesa and showered his grace on him, and He disappeared. After a few hours, Vallabhesa regained consciousness and came to know the miracle that had happened. He continued his journey, visited Kuruvapuram, and completed his vow.

IN 2001, AFTER 33 GENERATIONS, THE SACRED BIOGRAPHY SRIPADA SRIVALLABHA CHARITAMRUTAM CAME TO LIGHT

The ‘Sripada Srivallabha Charitamrutam‘ is an extraordinary book about the first incarnation of Lord Dattatreya in the present age. Inspiring and entertaining, it gives an insight into the fascinating biography of Sripada Srivallabha (1320-1350), his sportive plays, teachings, prophecies, and miracles. It provides a feeling of being in his very presence and participating in the events. ‘I will remain in a subtle form in every place where My biography is devotedly read. Mine is a comprehensive yogic incarnation. Great yogis and great Siddhas constantly meditate upon Me. Don’t think that the ‘Sripada Srivallabha Charitamrutam’ is a mere book. It is a live stream of a glorious consciousness.’ As decreed by Sripada, the work written during his lifetime was kept secret. He predicted that it would come to light during the 33rd generation of his maternal grandfather. And it did appear as prophesised in 2001. It was published in Telugu and has now been translated into several languages. As predicted centuries ago in the original, the Sripada Srivallabha Charitamrutam now also appears in German.

A Brahmin by the name Shankar Bhatt wrote the divine biography of Sri Sripada originally in Sanskrit back in the fourteenth century. A book of its Telugu translation was family-held and resided with Govind Deekshitulu Malladi, who belonged to the 33rd generation of Sri Bapannavadhanulu (Bapanarya). In the book Sripada Srivallabha Charitamrutam, it was prophesised that it would come to light in the 33rd generation after Sri Bapannavadhani, but it was not explained at what time and how it would take place.

In the words of Govind Deekshitulu, ‘I doubted whether this Charitāmrutam could be made known to the outside world or not. One day when I was in the area of Bhimavaram, Mavullamma temple, an old beggar asked me for money for meals. I gave him eleven rupees. Within two or three days, a prasad from the ashram of Sri Narasimha Saraswati Gangapur came through the post. A receipt was also enclosed showing the day of the receipt, which tallied with the day I gave eleven rupees to the old beggar. In reality, I did not send any money at all to Gangapur. I realised then that Sripada, who also reincarnated in the form of Sri Narasimha Saraswati, wished that the time to reveal the Charitamrutam to the world had arrived. After this realisation, I carefully copied the old book, which was brittle and would be torn by the mere touch. As mentioned in the Charitamrutam, I went to Vijayawada and immersed the old copy in the Krishna River. The new book, which I copied, was handed over after performing the parayana (sacred reading of the book) to the Sripada Srivallabha Maha Samsthan as directed in the Charitamrutam.

This book is one where every letter is true. Every letter written in this book is powerful and accurate. In this book, there are no hyperboles or meaningless descriptions. Shankar Bhatt, who did not have much of an erudite experience, wrote this sacred book. He was a Kannadiga (a person whose mother tongue is Kannada language). Sri Sripada granted him grace because he was worthy.

Sripada Srivallabha Himself says:
‘The highly sacred book ‘Sripada Srivallabha Charithamrutaam’ will become ‘kalpa tharuvu’ (the tree which gives whatever is asked) for my devotees. That will be true for every letter. The reading of this book will greatly enable the rectification of ‘manomaya jagat’ (world of the mind). Parayana (devotional reading) of this book will give everything in this world and other worlds also. Every letter in this is equal to Veda ‘Vak’ (Vedic Speech). The Sanskrit version of this book will remain in sound form many depths below the Audumbar tree in Maha Samsthanam. The book will be translated into many languages. The divine experiences and the protection will be the same, in whatever language it is read. It will be read by Siddha Yogis.

As per divine instructions of Sripada, the first Parayana of this book was done by the author Shankar Bhatt himself, on Guru Dwadasi Day in the year 1353 A.D., three years after Sripada’s disappearance in the Krishna river.

Thirty-three generations later, in the year 2001, Parayana was done for the first time in the holy presence of Sripada in the Sri Sripada Maha Samsthanan, and the book was officially handed over.

Govinda Deekshitulu concludes: ‘We have affectionate devotion for Sri Sripada. Ours is a delicate nature, and we are pained if anyone speaks jeeringly about this most sacred book. Our family is one that never craves name, fame, or money. However, we deemed it our duty to hand over this sacred biography, which is so precious to Datta devotees. That is why it was brought to light.’

Bapanarya Malladi Bapannavadhanulu is the grandfather of Sripada Srivallabha, who had an essential role in the young Sripada’s life. He is also called Satya Rusheeshwara and is famous as ‘Saanga Vedartha Samrat.’ He was a velanati vydic Brahmin and an apasthamba sutra and belonged to Harithasa gothra.

‘Labha’ is the son of Sri Ganesha. In one kalpa, in one of the yugas, He became famous as Labhada Maharishi. He was born as Nanda during the Avatar incarnation of Sri Krishna. He lived in one of his previous births in Brihat Sila Nagaram as Raja Guru with the name of ‘Bhaskara.’ Labha himself was born as the grandfather of Sripada Srivallabha.

He, along with Malladi Sridhara Avadhanulu from ‘Kousikasa’ Gothram, came to Ayinavilli village in Godavari Mandalam to perform ‘swarna ganapathi maha yajnam’. At the end of the ‘yajnam’, Ganapathi manifested Himself with a golden glow, took the poorna ahuthi with his trunk, and promised that he would be soon born as Sripada Srivallabha with all kalaas on the day of Ganesh Chaturdhi. He had the merit of repeating Gayatri Mantra many crores of times. He was the chairman of ‘Brahmana Parishat’ in Peethikapuram. He would worship chiefly the sun and fire God. He performed the marriage of Sumathi and Apparaja Sharma based on the divine instructions he received during Shani Pradosha time in Kukkuteshwara Temple.

Sripada was born in Bapanarya’s house, where his Padukas were installed. Today the house is the location of Sripada Srivallabha’s Mahasamsthanam in Pithapuram. Sripada Srivallabha was very close to his grandfather from a very young age and used to accompany him to the meetings of Brahmana Parishat. Bapanarya invoked power into Sri Mallikarjuna Lingam in Srisaila Kshetram, Mahabaleswara Lingam in Gokarnam, and some other divine places from solar orbit.

Once, Cholera was spreading in Peethikapuram, and many people were dying. The doctors concluded that bacteria were spreading because of water contamination, and the disease was spreading like an infectious disease. The people were frightened and prayed to Bapanarya to protect them from cholera, to find out ways indicated in shastras to protect the people, and take appropriate measures immediately. Sri Bapanaryulu looked with his inner eye and found that it was not due to water contamination but air contamination. The doctors curtly said that what Sri Bapanaryulu was saying was against the things written in medical books and hence not acceptable. Sri Bapanaryulu asked for a big vessel with water to be kept in front of him. He chanted appropriate mantras to kill the poisonous bacteria. Those poisonous bacteria dropped from the air, making noise while falling in the water-filled vessel. Immediately, the pollution in the air cleared, and cholera left Peethikapuram.

Most importantly, Bapanaarya was the receiver of the Siddha Mangala Stotram (see Sadhana section).

Holy Sites and Pilgrimages

Peethikapuram or Pithapuram

Pithapuram (Peethikapuram) is a municipality in the East Godavari district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is home to one of the eighteen Maha Shakti Peethas, ‘pada gaya’ tirtham, Kunthi Madhavaswamy temple, Kukkuteswara temple, Swayambhu Dattatreya temple, etc. It was the birthplace of Sripada Srivallabha Swami.

The Sripada Srivallabha Mahasamsthanam is the sacred location where Sripada Srivallabha was born and was frequently visited by Sripada Srivallabha during his youth. During His Incarnation, this holy premise was the residential house of Sri Bapannavadhanulu, His maternal Grandfather.

Pithapuram railway station is located on the Duvvada-Vijayawada section of the Howrah-Chennai main line. The Rajahmundry Airport is located 55km from Pithapuram. Accommodation is available in Mahasamshtan for devotees who want to stay in Peethikapuram.

In the Festival Days of a year, Special Programmes of Worship and Abhisheka (ritualistic bath to the deity) are conducted at Maha Samshtanam. All the upcoming programs in the Mahasamsthan are updated here.

Kuruvapuram

Kuruvapuram or Kurugadda is an auspicious place. It is a small island in the river Krishna where Sripada Srivallabha did his penance and is known as his Tapobhoomi. This village is located on the border of the Telangana & Karnataka States in India. On the other bank of the river is Vallabhapuram, belonging to the Telangana state and considered sacred. The place where Lord Datta immersed Himself in water is now the Kuruvapuram. This is the place where Kuru Maharaj, who was the root person for the Kauravas and Pandavas, was given ‘upadesam of jnana’ (imparting of wisdom)

Important places to visit at Kuruvapur are the Sripada Vallabha Paduka Mandir (temple for sacred sandals of the lord), a 1000 years Vata Vriksha (tree), a cave where Tembe Swamy Maharaj performed penance, and the Audumbar Vriksha (Indian Fig tree). Also, Sripada Mudras (gestures) on the other side of the river and the Datta Mandir at Sri Vithal Baba Ashram are worth visiting.

Kuruvapuram is about 30 kilometres distance from the district headquarters Raichur of Karnataka. There is a bus facility from Raichur to Aathkur, which is one-and-a-half-hours journey. From Aathkur to Kuruvapur, each person has to travel in the Krishna river in small boats or ‘butti’. There is a railway station at Raichur. Another route is from Mahaboobnagar. Kuruvapuram is about a two-and-a-half-hours journey from the district headquarter Mahaboobnagar. Mahaboobnagar is about two-and-a-half-hours from the state capital Hyderabad. Devotees can catch direct buses from Hyderabad to Raichur and have to get off at Makthal. From Makthal to Kurugadda (Kuravapur), autos and jeeps are available. Devotees need to engage an auto or jeep to reach Krishna river. From there, also buttis and small boats are available to reach the Temple.

There are no lodging and boarding facilities are available at Kuruvapur. If one wants to stay in the temple at night, the temple’s pandits will arrange for food (with prior intimation after reaching there), and one will have to sleep on the temple premises.

Bibliography

Sripada Srivallabha Charitramutam by Shankar Bhatt
(Biography of a Dattatreya Avatar)

The ‘Sripada Srivallabha Charitamrutam‘ is an extraordinary book about the first incarnation of Lord Dattatreya in the present age. In a fascinating and entertaining way, it gives an insight into the life of Sripada Srivallabha (1320-1350), his sportive plays, teachings, prophecies, and miracles. It gives a feeling of being in his very presence and participating in the events.

It is a live stream of a glorious consciousness.’

As decreed by Sripada, the work written during his lifetime was kept secret. It would come to light during the 33rd generation of his maternal grandfather. And indeed it did appear as prophesied in 2001. It was originally published in Telugu and has now been translated into several languages. As predicted centuries ago in the original, the Sripada Srivallabha Charitamrutam also appears in the German language.
